The 6-Day Umbwe Route is renowned as the steepest and most demanding trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting south of the mountain, it ascends rapidly through dense rainforest along narrow ridges before reaching Barranco Camp. Joining the Southern Circuit via Karanga Valley and Barafu High Camp, it offers an intense physical test rewarded with stunning vistas and low traffic. Due to its quick elevation gains, this route is best suited for fit hikers with prior high-altitude experience.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) where your African Traces team meets and transfers you to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your head guide for a detailed briefing, health check, and gear assessment before starting your expedition.

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
Day 1: Moshi to Umbwe Gate – Trek to Umbwe Camp
Distance: 11 km / 7 mi | Trekking Time: 5–6 hours | Elevation: Umbwe Gate (1,800 m) → Umbwe Camp (2,850 m / 9,350 ft)
Drive from Moshi to Umbwe Gate for park registration. Begin trekking on a steep, winding path through dense rainforest, ascending narrow forest ridges between the Lonzo and Umbwe rivers to reach Umbwe Camp.

Trekking Tip:
● Use trekking poles early to ease the pressure on your knees on steep sections.
● Pace yourself carefully ("Pole Pole") to manage the initial altitude jump.
● Wear sturdy boots with good traction as rain can make the forest roots slick.

Leave the rainforest behind as the terrain transforms into rocky, exposed moorland along the steep Umbwe Ridge. Ascend rapidly toward the Southern Glaciers before descending slightly into the scenic Barranco Valley.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Conquer the famous Barranco Wall using hands-on scrambling. Enjoy sweeping valley views from the ridge top before navigating a series of hills and gullies down into Karanga Valley for an afternoon rest.

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu High Camp

Trek across alpine desert terrain to reach Barafu High Camp. Arrive early to rest, hydrate, organize gear, and receive your summit briefing before the midnight summit push.

Summit Push to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Mweka
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) → Descend to Mweka Camp
Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent | Trekking Time: 11–13 hours total | Elevation: Barafu Camp (4,673 m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) → Mweka Camp (3,100 m)
Begin your summit push around midnight, ascending steep scree paths to Stella Point (5,756 m) and continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After celebrating on top, descend back to Barafu for rest before continuing to Mweka Camp.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate → Transfer to Moshi

Complete a final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your official summit certificates, bid farewell to your trekking crew, and transfer back to Moshi.
